DanceSport
DanceSport is the competitive aspect of ballroom dancing and is now a Recognised Sport by the International Olympic Committee.
It has a highly organised competition structure nationally and internationally. In Australia there are three major styles:
- Modern Ballroom which covers Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Viennese Waltz and Quickstep;
- Latin American covering the dances Cha Cha Cha, Samba, Rumba, Paso Doble and Jive; and
- New Vogue which are sequence dances of Australian origin, set to the various Modern Ballroom rhythms.
Competitive DanceSport events are broken up into age categories each of which consist of five levels, or grades, for each style. These age categories range from Juvenile and Junior, through Youth, to Adult and Masters.
Ballroom Dancing has, in the past, been considered to be "an art" however the current perception of DanceSport is that it is an artistic sport.
This is based on the fact that competition dancing requires strength, stamina, agility, co-ordination; discipline and teamwork as well as the artistic components of musical interpretation, grace, grooming and style.
